Mourning Pope Francis
Posted on Apr 21, 2025
“Pope Francis was a guiding light of compassion, humility, and renewal. He devoted his life to the poor and reminded us that "When we encounter a poor person, we cannot look away, for that would prevent us from encountering the face of the Lord Jesus." He led by example, and we could ask for no greater shepherd to have tended to his flock. As we grieve this loss, may his life and example continue to inspire and guide us all.” - Dr. Dwayne Zarichny, Superintendent of Schools
Flags at Medicine Hat Catholic schools and Central Office will be lowered to half-mast in honour of Pope Francis. Flags will remain lowered for nine days, as we join the global Catholic community in mourning his passing and offering prayers for the repose of his soul.
Funeral Details
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis’ funeral will be held outside in St. Peter’s Square six days after his passing.
- Date: Saturday, April 26
- Time: 10:00 AM local time (1:00 AM MST)
- Vatican Livestream: Vatican News - YouTube
The funeral liturgy will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals – the group which will in the coming weeks be tasked with appointing a new pope.
The process of choosing a new pope, known as conclave, is a combination of ancient tradition, religious ritual and politics. The voting takes place behind closed doors. Only cardinals under the age of 80 – slightly over half the total number – have a say in the decision.
Once the cardinals are assembled in Rome, usually around 15 days after the pope’s death, they meet in the Sistine Chapel to begin the decision-making process.
Medicine Hat Catholic Schools Response
As we return from Easter break, our hearts are with the global Catholic community as we reflect on the life, humility, and enduring compassion of Pope Francis.
In solidarity with schools across Alberta, our students and staff will be praying a Novena for Pope Francis—nine consecutive school days of prayer, rooted in faith and love.
A novena is a nine consecutive day prayer where we pray for the same intention or devotion. We are praying for nine consecutive school days, so students can experience a full novena.
Through daily classroom prayers, activities, and reflections, students will explore the remarkable life and legacy of Pope Francis, and the impact he has made around the world.
A Prayer Upon the death of Pope Francis
Lord God,
you chose Pope Francis to be shepherd over the Church
and to serve you as the Vicar of your Son Jesus.
Welcome him into the glory of your kingdom
and grant him the eternal reward of a faithful servant.
May his teachings and examples continue to nourish and inspire our faith
and may his intercession continue to benefit all peoples of the world.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
